Can creativity help you heal?
No matter where you live, you have probably experienced some kind of loss this year. You may have lost a loved one, a level of prosperity or just a way of living. Loss is so disorienting that we spend a great deal of time and resources trying to prevent any kind of loss. Some people even stay in bad situations in order to avoid loss.
So when loss occurs you may feel like you don't know who you are anymore. You may be disoriented. It's important that you be kind to yourself and let all the emotions out. Once you know how you feel you will know how you can get back to your true self.
In my experience, having some kind of creative outlet is one of the best way to heal loss.
First, it requires that you stay present. If you try to be creative while worrying about tomorrow, you will not create anything, you will even be paralyzed. It is only by focusing on the present moment that you will be able to create anything.
Second, there are no wrong way to be creative. Kids love to draw outside the lines for a reason. It shows their spirit. Your emotions need a place to go and using colors, textures or any material is the best way to do so. Emotions don't like to follow lines or rules and they allow you to be the most creative way possible. Let them go!
What happens after you allow your emotions to express themselves? They lose their power. You are able to observe them with less attachment and greater perspective. You may even find a reassurance in the expression of your emotions. An acknowledgement that they are valid and useful.
When you let your creative side express itself fully you infuse your body, your mind and your spirit with the essence of life itself - creation. The more you do it, the more it comes and the greater you will feel. You will acknowledge the loss, acknowledge yourself and maybe even create something beautiful!
So what are you waiting for? Grab a pen and paper and get started!
